Black Willow
This acoustic guitar-based story song is a poignant reflection on a tragic event. On the evening of June 17, 2015, a mass shooter named Dylann Roof entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and took the lives of nine people during a Bible study. This hateful act of violence sent shockwaves across America.
Vili, was deeply saddened and horrified by the news telecast of the event. Shortly after, he felt compelled to write lyrics that used nature imagery to tell the story. Through his lyrics and music, he captured the raw emotions and heartbreaking reality of the event.
In the studio, Vili overdubbed strings, horns, flute, and other instruments to bring the song to life. The result is a hauntingly beautiful melody played in a minor key that draws the listener in and takes them on a journey.
Through his narration of the scenes and musical composition, Vili encourages listeners to reflect on the senselessness and ask themselves, "why?". At the same time bringing comfort and hope.
